Psoriasis is a long-term (chronic) skin condition that affects about 3.2% of people in the U.S. Psoriasis happens when the immune system causes skin cells to grow too quickly, leading to thick, red, scaly patches on the skin. Psoriasis is not contagious, and it can range from mild to more serious. Some people with psoriasis—about 1 in 5—also develop a type of arthritis called psoriatic arthritis. This condition causes joint pain, stiffness, and swelling. Without treatment, psoriatic arthritis can lead to lasting joint damage.
