Many people don’t realize how important volume is to a youthful-looking face. From nicely rounded “apples” of the cheeks to a smooth and even overall surface, volume is a key aspect of maintaining an appearance of vitality and health. That’s why Juvéderm® at Palm Beach’s Carroll Dermatology is such a popular cosmetic dermatology treatment. The injectable gel is ideal for introducing volume exactly where it’s needed to minimize age-related creases or shaping well-defined contours. Not sure what you need? Our experienced team will talk with you about your goals, assess the current look and health of your skin, and then recommend a custom-tailored treatment designed to restore a youthful look—along with your confidence!
Juvéderm® dermal fillers are a collection of injectable gels, all made from hyaluronic acid (HA). While you may have heard of hyaluronic acid as an ingredient in certain skincare products, you may not know exactly what it is. Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that the human body makes naturally to accomplish a range of benefits, from filling the eyes to helping joints move smoothly to keeping the skin healthy and hydrated. The molecule is a sugar that acts almost like a water magnet. Each HA molecule can pull in and hold up to 1,000 times its own wait in water, giving it an amazing ability to plump and volumize.
The HA in Juvéderm® is made specifically to closely mimic natural hyaluronic acid, so it serves the same role in the skin once it’s injected. Each molecule introduced during the treatment binds to water, creating a full look that pushes the surface of the skin outward in areas where it has sunken in due to loss of natural HA, collagen, fat, and even bone.
The volume from Juvéderm® can also be used to help with the skin’s structural support function. Youthful facial contours rely on full“apples” in the midface, where the rounded volume works to “hold up” the facial skin farther down on the face. As these apples deflate over time, this skin no longer has support, so it can migrate downward. The resulting laxity and“slumping” can make the jawline look soft instead of sharp—and can even case the formation of jowls.
The premise behind Juvéderm® is simple: It counters changes to a person’s appearance that result from age-related volume loss, as well as the destruction of natural collagen and hyaluronic acid by ultraviolet radiation and other environmental sources. With volume restored, the targeted areas look and even move the way they did in youth. The body breaks down the injected gel over time, so results can be expected to last anywhere from six months to two years.
The Juvéderm® family of dermal fillers is made to have options for addressing a range of cosmetic issues. From fine “touch-ups” to thicker gels that do the “heavy lifting” of volume restoration, there is something for just about anyone who wants their face to look beautiful smooth and contoured.
Carroll Dermatology offers all of the member of the Juvéderm® family, using them separately as needed or blending their results with each other—as well as other treatments—to create especially natural-looking restoration.
Juvéderm® Ultra XC
If you have nasolabial folds, which are creases that form and deepen on either side of the mouth and nose, this option could be ideal for you. The formulation is designed to minimize facial wrinkles and folds, especially on the lower third of the face. It can also enhance the lips, as well as smooth lines around the mouth, with effects lasting for up to a year.
Juvéderm®Ultra Plus XC
Another crease-filling injectable, this formulation is a bit thicker to handle more severe folds and wrinkles for up to one year.
Juvéderm Voluma® XC
Designed for deep injection, Voluma® is made to improve contours in the cheek area, as well as to enhance the chin’s profile. It can also counter hollowing that develops in the temples. Expect results to last for up to two years in the midface and one year in the chin.
Juvéderm Volux® XC
Loss of jawline definition is common as patients get older.Like Voluma®, Volux® is made for deep injection, but to improve jawline definition for more visibly distinct contours. The contours can last for up to a year.
Juvéderm Vollure® XC
Patients seeking to minimize facial creasing have another option in Vollure®, which can last up to 18 months.
Juvéderm Volbella® XC
While Vollure® was made to augment the lips, as well as to smooth perioral lines around the mouth, it can also be used to fill hollows that form under the eyes. Results can last for up to a year in both areas.
Note that adding volume can help with creases, but is not the preferred approach for minimizing the fine lines and wrinkles that develop due to ongoing muscle activity. Those lines, known as dynamic wrinkles, are best treated with BOTOX® or similar muscle-relaxing neuromodulators.
Each injector providing Juvéderm® at Carroll Dermatology has been thoroughly trained and has decades of experience working with injectables in general, as well as the specific Juvéderm® family. Our knowledge of facial anatomy and the way fillers impact the look and movement of the face allow us to create beautifully natural-looking results. Many people mistakenly think that anyone who offers cosmetic treatments can work with injectables, but the safest and best results require more than typing “Juvéderm® near me” into your phone and picking the first practice that pops up.
At Carroll Dermatology, we will take the time to meet with you personally and learn about you during a private consultation. You can ask us whatever questions you would like, and we will review your medical history, assess your skin and cosmetic goals, and talk you through the options.
When it comes time for the treatment itself, know that the injections take a matter of minutes. The specific length of a session will depend on which areas are being treated, and how many areas total are having volume added, but the entire experience can wrap up in as little as a typical lunch break. Our primary goals are safety and results, but efficiency is also important to us!
Many people say that the injections themselves feel like someone is quickly pinching their skin. The “XC” at the end of each Juvéderm® formulation indicates that the gel contains lidocaine, which is added to further improve patient comfort.
Patients should avoid rubbing or pushing on the areas where gel was injected in order to minimize its spread into other areas. Some slight bruising and swelling can be expected, but side effects from the injectables are minimal and quickly resolved.
Unlike other treatments that take days for results to develop, the volume from a Juvéderm® session will be noticeable right away. In fact, because of the initial post-treatment swelling, the area might look a little “over-filled”—especially in the lips. If this is the case for you, don’t worry. Once the swelling resolves in a matter of days, the area will look more naturally full as opposed to outsized.
Other volume-adding fillers available at Carroll Dermatology include the Revance RHA family, Radiesse®, Revanesse® Versa™,and Sculptra®,which triggers collagen production in skin. Another option is autologous fat transfer with PRP, which moves the body’s own fat cells and combines them with healing platelets. Which is best for you? Schedule a consultation with us to find out!
